Pediatric Dental Crowns San Antonio TX
BENEFITS OF RESTORATIONS
Damaged teeth not only affect the appearance of your child’s smile, but functionality in everyday life, too. It’s important to address cracks or other damage to prevent them from causing further problems later on. Individual crowns are sometimes necessary to save a broken or worn-down tooth when a simple filling will not restore it to full functionality. By surrounding and supporting the healthy tooth structure, pediatric dental crowns will save and even add strength to the damaged tooth.
STAINLESS STEEL CROWNS
Stainless steel crowns (SSCs) are prefabricated crowns that are adapted to individual teeth. Stainless steel pediatric crowns are most often used for teeth with extensive caries, decalcification, and/or developmental defects.
SSCs offer the advantage of full coverage to provide strength and restore form and function. They also protect the tooth from developing caries (cavities) again. Studies have shown that crowns have greater longevity when compared to resin-based restorations. Therefore, the use of SSCs is indicated for children at a higher risk for developing cavities. SSCs should also be used to treat the teeth of children that require general anesthesia to complete their dental care.
ZIRCONIA CROWNS
Zirconia pediatric crowns also offer the advantage of full coverage to provide strength, and they restore form and function. They also protect the tooth from developing caries again. Zirconia crowns offer the same protection as an SSC while also providing an esthetic option for restoring the tooth. While zirconia crowns are beautiful, they do require more time to prepare as well as increased patient cooperation to allow for successful treatment. Zirconia crowns are very strong but can be fractured, requiring replacement.
